  • What is a dental emergency?

Several types of dental emergencies can occur, such as sudden and severe toothaches, accidents that result in chipping or cracking of a tooth, a damaged or loose restoration, or a lost or damaged tooth. To determine whether your situation is an emergency or not, you can ask yourself the following questions:

    • Are you experiencing severe pain or swelling?
    • Do you have a persistent and painful toothache?
    • Do you have a loose or knocked-out tooth?
    • Are you experiencing tooth sensitivity to an extreme degree?
    • Are you bleeding from the mouth and unable to stop it?
    • Is your jaw injured?
    • Are you experiencing swelling in your cheeks or face combined with a toothache?

Any dental problem requiring immediate treatment to stop bleeding, alleviate severe pain, or save a tooth is considered an emergency. This also applies to severe infections that can be life-threatening, and you should contact your dental office as soon as possible.

  • What is not a dental emergency?

If you can manage the issue on your own for a few days without the need to visit a dentist, then it’s probably not a dental emergency. For instance, if you have a chipped or cracked tooth, it’s only an emergency if the fracture is causing pain or has resulted in mouth trauma. Similarly, you can wait a few days to see your dentist if you have lost a tooth or filling.

  • What’s the best way to handle a dental emergency?

In a dental emergency, it is best to contact your dentist. However, if the situation is extremely severe, you should go to the emergency room. Depending on the type of dental emergency you are experiencing, there are some things you can do to ease your pain and help the situation.

    • Dissolve a teaspoon of salt into a mug of warm water and use it as a mouthwash.
    • If your tooth is knocked out, place it in a glass of milk until you can see your dentist.
    • Try flossing to eliminate any gum pressure.
    • Use a cold compress on the swelling or painful area.
    • Rinsing with diluted Hydrogen Peroxide to kill bacteria.
    • Taking over-the-counter pain medication to alleviate pain.
